Data platforms for utilities

Utilities run some of the longest-lived systems in any industry and answer to regulators on a schedule. I worked as a data architect at a regional utility, and the telemetry work I did afterward in manufacturing maps closely onto meter and grid data.

What is different about utility data

A utility's systems are measured in decades. Metering, outage management, asset records, and billing were often bought from different vendors in different eras, and the people who configured them have moved on. Meanwhile smart meters and grid sensors produce telemetry at a volume those older systems were never designed for.

The reporting cannot slip. Regulators expect filings on a schedule, and the numbers in them have to trace back to source.

Where I help

  • Telemetry at scale. Partitioning and modeling for high-volume meter and grid data, so queries and pipeline costs stay predictable as sensors multiply.
  • A modern layer over old systems. An architecture that reads from long-lived source systems without requiring them to be replaced first.
  • Reports that trace to source. Lineage and governance so a regulatory figure can be followed back to the reading it came from.
