Data platforms for compliance and regulated data
Compliance data is judged by people whose job is to find the gap. I have built governance for regulated data under HIPAA, PCI DSS, SOX, GDPR, CCPA, and COPPA, in digital health and in games.
What is different about compliance data
Most data platforms are built to answer questions. A compliant one also has to answer questions about itself: who could see this record last March, where did this number come from, and can you prove you deleted what a customer asked you to delete. Those answers have to come from the systems, because an auditor will not accept a spreadsheet someone assembled the week before.
Many companies also sit under several regimes at once. One customer record might carry health information, card data, and a European address, and each brings its own rules.
Where I help
- Access that matches policy. Fine-grained, role-based access, with each person's identity carried through to the data rather than flattened into a shared service account.
- Lineage and metadata. A catalog and lineage that show where each regulated field came from and where it went.
- Privacy controls. Tokenization, redaction, encryption, and audit-ready logging for PHI, PII, and card data.
- Data-subject rights. Workflows for access and deletion requests under GDPR and CCPA, and age-gating protections under COPPA.
If you build compliance software, the same discipline applies to your own platform, with the added weight that your customers are trusting you to get it right on their behalf.
